  • Criminal Investigation XD: nanotechnology in forensic investigation toward a safer society

    January 30th, 2024

Original Source (in Dutch) by Max Nab:

The smart cotton swab. A tool that can date fingerprints on the spot. These are examples of technological innovations that lecturers Martin Bennink (Applied Nanotechnology) and Jaap Knotter (Technologies for Criminal Investigation) have developed for use at crime scenes. In the Criminal Investigation DX project, part of the National Science Agenda (NWA), they are working on two new technological innovations over the next five years. Their ambition extends beyond the domain of forensic investigation: “We want to make a direct contribution to trust in our rule of law and the safety of our society.”

  • Pioneers in Healthcare Voucher

    January 23th, 2024

Earlier this week our research team #AppliedNanotechnology at #Saxion has been awarded a #PioneerInHealthcare voucher (#PIHC). entitled “Continuous glucose monitoring (#CGM) in the intensive care unit”.  This project will be coordinated by Kim Kamphorst from the Deventer Ziekenhuis, and other involved partners are Ziekenhuisgroep Twente (ZGT) and Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST).

Both hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in intensive care (ICU) patients are strongly associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Accurate and timely measurement of glucose levels in this population is therefore crucial. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) appears promising for this purpose, but it is not yet used in the ICU due to insufficient knowledge about its reliability in the ICU population. The aim of this pilot study is to investigate (1) the discrepancy between CGM and point-of-care measurements in ICU patients, and (2) whether this discrepancy is consistent across all ICU patient groups/characteristics.

Researchers involved are Arriette Kruisdijk-Gerritsen (DZ), Huub van den Oever (DZ), Martin Bennink (Saxion), Aurel Ymeti (Saxion), Bart Grady (ZGT), Hans Krabbe (ZGT, MST), Mattijs Out (MST), en Bert Beishuizen (MST)

She was content in her previous job, but in 2021, Aniek Welman came across a position at Saxion that aligned perfectly with her background. She’s now a staff member in education and research at the Applied Nanotechnology research group. “I was given ample space right away to explore which projects I wanted to engage with. Initially, I wanted to contribute everywhere, but now a sense of focus is emerging. That’s beneficial. I just want to keep improving in my work,” Aniek explains.

  • EduLARP: a ‘role-playing game’ for empathetic engineering students?

    November 23th, 2023

Original Source (in Dutch) by Jos Eertink:

What do nanotechnology and playing a role-playing game have in common? Verena Schulze Greiving, lecturer-researcher in Ethics & Technology and Applied Nanotechnology, makes this clear to us through playful means. Using Live Action Role Playing (LARP), Verena aims to raise awareness among engineering students about the impact technological advancements can have on people and society. Over the next year and a half, she will explore the potential of eduLARP in a Comenius project. Injecting a patient without needles? Just act it out!

  • Is e-waste the new gold? Podcast (series Denkers & Doeners)

    November 20th, 2023

Original Source (in Dutch) by Anne Hurenkamp:

Every year, 100 million printed circuit boards (PCBs) are manufactured worldwide. They are found in our smartphones, laptops, e-bikes, and nowadays even in refrigerators. These PCBs contain metals such as gold, silver, and copper. To prevent these valuable and sometimes hazardous raw materials from becoming e-waste after the use of our equipment, Bert Swennenhuis from the Saxion Applied Nanotechnology research group collaborates with students and industry on a recycling solution. Artificial intelligence (machine learning) plays a significant role in this endeavor. Aleksandar Andreski is involved in the project as an associate lecturer.

Second Episode In this second installment of Thinkers & Doers, Anka Mulder, Chair of the Saxion Board of Directors, sends editor Anne Hurenkamp out once again with the question: how does this solution contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable world?
